Student Responses

The day before Christmas break I have my students fill out a couple feedback surveys. They respond to prompts I wrote. I do this for a few reasons: I get feedback on how they are feeling about the class, they reflect on their own effort, and I learn more about my students.
Here are some authentic responses from my current students:

On a scale from 1 to 10, how would you rate your effort in this class so far this year? Is that something you would like to change?

• I choose a 9.99 because I’m doing the best I can but not enough. I’m definitely going to start doing my homework.
• I would rate my effort 2/10. I missed a lot of school and didn’t learn that much. To change that I could come to school more often.
• My effort started out like 3 and now I think it’s a 2. I would like to change it to make it a 4 or a 5.

I think I would learn better if Mr. Burrill:

• Have a tortur for me like an actual tortur not h.w. club last year my school had an actually turur
(I think this is a great idea.)
• Yelled more like how he does because it keeps me interested and it’s funny.
(No problem.)
I think I would learn better if Mr. Burrill shared his Wheat Thins! Food is energy, and energy is brain power, right?
• Shaved his whole head bald.

I have most difficulty in Mr. Burrill’s class when:

The most difficult thing is when these children don’t know when to shut the hell up. The number one kid that gets on my nurvs is Zach Reynolds, that bitch ass mother fucker.

(She is doing great in math class. I will work with her on appropriate language when writing to an adult.)

Tell me 3 things about yourself that are either interesting, important to you, or something you would like me to know.

I love to draw. I don’t like reading things especially if they don’t make sence.
(We believe you.)
• I like music (all kinds) except for like hard rock the type where they be screamin and stuff.
• My favorite colors are: pink, purple, blue, black, white, gold, and silver.
• I’m now good at math and I love this class. 2. I hope I’m still good at math in high school and college. 3. I plan on tackling all of my teachers at graduation… watch out!

Overall my feeling about this class are:

• Very good. I love this class. This is a class that makes me wake up in the morning and get ready to learn some new stuff every day.

(I guess I’ll keep my day job.)

You can work with her on appropriate language but you have to admit that nothing quite catches the spirit of the description like Bi*** A** M-Fer, at least give her credit for being clearly descriptive.
P.S. Is Zach really that bad?
